ID Theft

Somebody with same name using your phone number?

A friend of mine received two phone calls asking for her by name, from people she does not know. One of them said that he was hoping they were the same people he knew, and that he had searched on the internet to find their phone number. He was sorry that he had the wrong people, but they happened to have the same names as another couple he was looking for! His phone number showed on their caller ID. Then, she got another call last night, but it showed on the caller ID as "blocked call," and this person kept insisting she knew them. They finally got her to leave them alone, but she acted very angry that they didn't know her. Is there a new kind of identity theft that starts with using the phone number of somebody with the same name? It's creepy. What does a person do to prevent any further problem with this?

  1. Don't get all worked up over this. With 300 million people (as of this afternoon), chances of two names matching are good. You can do this on the internet by punching in your name. See how many you get. There is nothing creepy about this. A person cannot steal your id unless you give it to them - it could happen unwittingly but you gave, that's the point. Just brush it off as a coincidence and don't waste your money, time and energy over a small occurrence. Just laugh. That's the only way to go. ..
  2. Sounds like a coincidence. Don't get worked up.
