How is social security only id theft possible?
My brother was a victim of identity theft by an illegal immigrant looking for work and Iv recently started researching id theft and heard about ssn-only theft, also called synthetic id theft were someone uses a ssn but a different name. How does this work, I though the ssa would send the employer a letter saying the name doesn't match the number???

- It can take a couple of years to get that letter. It's just not a high priority to the federal government right now. And many employers don't really care, as there are no consequences for the employer.
- Employers are encouraged to verify the last name with the SSN. Employers are not required to do this. Then, the first time the SSA/IRS is going to know there is a mismatch is the following Feb/Mar when the W-2 is filed.
