An insurance company just called me about a wreck that I know nothing about.?

I received a phone call from Liberty Mutual Insurance earlier this week and just got the message on my voicemail. The following is a transcript directly from the message. She greeted me by my name so she did not call the wrong number. "I'm calling regarding medical bills that we received from you for an accident occurring on October 26, 2008. I don't find a claim set up for these bills. If you could please give me a call and let me know if this is an automobile accident that you filed with Liberty Mutual and if you're insured with Liberty Mutual or if the person you had the accident with had insurance with Liberty Mutual. I need a claim number and a policy number. If a claim number has not been setup then we need to setup a claim so I will need information regarding how the accident happened. Thank you. Ok, I have not had an accident in over three years and I have never had any dealings with Liberty Mutual. I'm single so there is no one else on my own insurance policy; but once again I have never had ANY dealings with Liberty or an accident as of late. Anybody have any idea on what the heck happened? Is this some type of insurance fraud, scam, identity stolen or what? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks. I have not been in a hospital in years...especially not October 26. And I doubt that she got the wrong number because she addressed me by my first name. Now, my voicemail does say my first name...but the situation is just weird. Thanks guys for all of your comments and advice.

  1. Liberty Mutual is a good, old-line company, so I doubt it's a scam; sounds like an adjuster looked in the wrong file. Call them back and explain what you know. I once got a call from an adjuster about an accident in Plymouth, Indiana a few months before, and I hadn't been in Plymouth in 30 years, plus they had the wrong type of car!
  2. get a hold of them immediately. notify the hospital where this claim was made in writing that you weren't involved. check your credit. basically, get ready to CYA
  3. Call them back and tell them what you told us. DON'T GIVE THEM ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION.
  4. Something doesn't sound right! Contact your own Insurance Company and have them look into it. Give them the information. They have a way of getting to the bottom of this.
  5. Call the lady back and explain to her the above. Obviously someone messed up somewhere. Ask where the bills were sent from. Did you go to the doctor at all on Oct. 26?
  6. It may have been a wrong number, it happens.
  7. I think she got a wrong number.
