Outline Identity Theft Main Idea: Identity theft is a rising problem in not just America but other countries as well and there is need for more protection against the crime that can ruin a person’s credit that could take years to fix. 1)What is identity theft? Identity theft is a term used for fraud that involves pretending to be someone else in order to steal money or get other benefits. In Illinois identity theft is a class A misdemeanor for the first offense and class 4 felonies for subsequent offenses. 2) What can be done to prevent it? (you) There are many protection services that can give you protection against identity theft such as Trusted ID. Trusted ID claims to protect you and your family from identity theft with many different features in their service. Some of the features are fraud flags which protect your credit with the three major credit bureaus by requiring companies to verify your identity before taking any action that could put your credit at risk, such as a new loan or credit card application. Another feature is $1,000,000 Warranty Protection this feature is that they back their service with a $1,000,000 service warranty to cover out of pocket costs associated with identity theft. One other feature is Credit card scanning where Trusted ID people patrol the black market internet where thieves buy and sell stolen credit card numbers and if your credit card numbers are found you are alerted immediately. 3) What can be done to prevent it? (Government) The government has websites such as http://www.idtheft.gov/. that tell you about what you can do to prevent it and what can be done to fix it. 4) What can you do to fix it?
