ID Theft

Do people in the UK worry much about "identity theft" and protection of your i.d. numbers, etc?

seems like that is the rage here for the media in the US. lately a school is being threatened to be cut off for federal monies due to an employee at the school "accidently" placing students social security i.d. numbers and names together on an open website. I dont really know or understand what is the big deal regarding this, but do you have this type of scare over there? what do you think of this? (big deal or not? why and how so? Thanks for your answers! To anyone past the two answerers who have posted already...is it a big deal or not in the media in the UK?

  1. Nah, I'm not worried. The identity fraudsters only target the big fish. You know the type: Job in the city, kids in private education, drives a Chelsea Tractor etc. They're not going to give two hoots for a humble chap like me. So it is a big deal but only if you're earning lots of lolly.
  2. Nah, not at all. I receive my bank statements and rip them up and throw them in the bin. Maybe I shouldn't and be a lot smarter and use a shredder, but I figure if someone is going to go through all the trouble of going through a filthy rubbish bin to place ten's of pieces of paper together, they deserve everything they can get out of me.
  3. Yes we do,after several fiascos imvolving lost data bases contained on 2 lost computer disks containing the details of over 2 million people we are very concerned over our personall details falling into the wrong hands
  4. No not at all I have had my bank account cleared out by someone who managed to get my card details.
