How to feel better after being victim of a burglary?

Came home two days ago to find my apartment burglarized and ransacked. They stole my 50" plasma TV which was only 5 months old and 2 speakers. Nothing else appears to be missing, which is good I guess. They could have stolen lots of other things that would have been hard to replace, or things that would have allowed someone to steal my identity, but they didn't. Filed a police report, then the fingerprint team came out last night to dust (didn't find much), and called my insurance (still waiting for a claims adjuster). Today I will be cleaning the apartment (that fingerprint dust is everywhere). Any advice on how to cope with being a victim of a burglary? Thanks in advance. All these answers are great - I will have a hard time choosing the best. Thanks for your support!

  1. Hey , it is just one of the bumps in the road of life. Don't let it make you go bonkers. Roll with the punches.
  2. Re-key or change the locks. Make sure the windows have locks on them. I know how you feel, it happened to me. All my good jewelry was stolen. I had just signed a contract on my condo and I was moving in 2 weeks anyway, so there was a lot of irony involved. It's creepy to know someone was in your house.
  3. Just think it wasn't in you luck. And be grateful for whatever hasn't been stolen. Just donate some money to some needy and feel free from the burden of possession. Let things go... ultimately everything will be left behind when you die. Buy another one or borrw for some time. Don't mourn. Cheer up.
  4. ((((Hugs))))) I'm sure that must be an awful feeling to have your home broken into. Things can be replaced, but that feeling of invasion will probably take much longer to get over. Make sure that you talk to your friends and family. Let them know how you feel. If you don't feel comfortable in your apartment, have someone stay with you at night for awhile. There is nothing wrong with that. Good luck :)
  5. No TV = they stole wasted time.
  6. Go see a trauma therapist. (short term) You have been violated in the sense of personal safety! Talk with the therapist about what happened and your feelings attached. It could come up and haunt you later on in life by nightmares, hyper vigilance, suspicious behaviors, sleep........... Go see someone. Sorry to hear that you were violated by this idiot. It's hard
