- This is simple. They probably they didn't purchase a house with your SSN. The bureau just put it on the wrong file. Send a dispute letter saying this isn't you and attach a copy of the mortgage broker's denial of doing business with you.
- You would know if someone bought a home using your identity....you would have a home loan showing on your report. Do you see a $200,000, $300,000 or more mortgage showing up that you don't recall applying for and paying on? Then you probably don't have a house in your name somewhere. What it sounds like you have, is an inquiry processed by a mortgage company or underwriter. If this is a "hard inquiry" (also called regular inquiries), it will show up under this category. This means that written or explicit verbal permission was given for the creditor to pull your file. This will stay on your report for 2 years, but will only affect your score for 12 months from the date. If it's listed as an "account review" inquiry, these are typical of lenders looking to extend you credit without your permission to look at your personal credit file, and no sensitive information was shared with them. This also DOES NOT affect your score, and will stay on your report for 2 years. I highly doubt you have a mortgage in your name...if you did, the mortgage lender would have told you on the phone.
