ID Theft

Is this forgery? ID Theft? or just bad luck? Need advise!!! (TX)?

My ex BF and I lived together for a few years in Texas. Many of my personal info. he knows and have access to while living together. I recently found out he used my SS to obtain a credit card (I pulled my credit report), however, he paid on time and still paying for whatever owe. I have never seen the credit card nor have knowledge of it. Is this Forgery? ID Theft? of just bad luck? I am concerned because what if he uses my SS again for something else and not pay for it then my credit will be a mess. I want to protect myself from being a victim.... I dont even think the police will take a report for this, since no harm was done, although, I havent try yet. I want his name on some kind of record so he cant use my SS again, is this possible ? Can someone help me? any suggestions? Thank you so much !!!!!

  1. This is ID Theft, you need to contact the police and file a report. He could use your SS again and not pay the bills he should. You might consider talking to SS about changing your number.
  2. It's identity theft...he's using your social security number to be able to get a credit card, whether it's in his name or yours.
  3. Whether he has been bad or good with what he did, it is STILL ID theft. You need to be careful here, & you need to report him for what he did. He did it without your knowledge, & that is theft.
  4. I don't know what you can do about the open card. I'm guessing you have to contact the credit card company and tell them it isn't your account. You can contact the credit bureau's to and have a fraud alert placed on the report. When a company does a credit check in response to an application, they will see the fraud alert which can instruct them NOT to issue credit without calling your phone number on the fraud alert.
  5. THROW HIM IN JAIL !!! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR ? WHEN HE BUYS A HOUSE IN YOUR NAME ?
  6. This is Identity Theft. You should definitely go to the police and file a report; most likely they will fill it out, because as we know, Identity Theft is becoming more and more rampant all over. The police will be able to help you with getting his name added to a list so he wouldn't do this to you or anyone else in the future.
  7. Even though he hasn't done any damage yet, he is committing a crime. You really need to turn this matter over to the police before he does it again. They will determine if it is either Forgery or ID Theft. I would also call the Social Security Administration about possibly changing your SS#. Here is something else to think about, what if he gets mad at you and decides to sell your personal info to someone else and they commit identity theft under your name? I would nip this problem in the butt before it potentially gets out of hand.
  8. They way you talk I suspect you really don't want to report him. Thats fine contact the credit card company advise them that this is not your card and have them cancel the card. then contact the 3 credit companys and see if they will put an alert on your credit. Sometimes they will and sometimes they won't without a police report.
  9. you need to approach him about it and give him an ultimatum to give you the credit card immediately and then pay off the remainder in the next few days. if he pays off the credit card then you should call the credit card company and have them send you a new credit card (new number, new expiration, etc). do not close this card because closing a card lessens your credit history average age and this hurts your credit, and you could probably benefit from this situation for having a card paid off in time but at the same time having an outstanding card in your name will increase your credit age history, which is good. if he cant pay off the credit card immediately or refuses to hand over the card, then you need to call the credit card company and tell them that your information was stolen. then they will hold their own investigation and if they find out that you waited more than a few days after finding out about the situation then they would have evidence that you knew about your ex doing this to you. this is why its important to set an ultimatum and give your ex as little time as possible to fix the situation, if he cant fix it then you must. in the future, you can put a credit freeze on your name to prevent anyone from opening new accounts, this protects you even if you, say, post your SSN on the internet. a credit freeze costs about 10 dollars per credit bureau (there are only three bureaus) but it should be free to do with all bureaus if you can demonstrate identity theft.
