How to get really protected from ID theft?

One of my friends just told me many people where he lives, included him, have been victims of ID theft, he had to cancel all of his accounts because of this, but anyway there have already done 4 million dollars charges in his credit card. What can a person do in such a situation??? what can we do to prevent it???

Not alot it happened to us and we are still going through hell even though it was nearly a year ago. They took 4 grand off us. No help when we needed it most. Now we are strug to pay bills and live day by day on money we dont have. OUCH.
4 Million dollars?!?! Anyway, if you have a renters or homeowners insurance policy check with your insurance company to see if they have an ID Theft endorsement...good luck and hope it doesn't ever happen to you!
I use a service called LIFELOCK. They protect youre id and back it up by restoring it if something does happen. They claim that they will give you a million dollars if your ID gets stolen but the million dollars can only be used to restore your ID so it wouldn't be as much as 1 million dollars. http://www.lifelock.com/
