Transgendered Health Insurance?
Does anyone know of any health insurance plans in the United States which would cover some of the medical costs associated with treating Gender Identity Disorder through male-to-female? Medications, surgeries, therapy, hair removal, anything at all? If not this is going to cost me tens and tens of thousands of dollars and I will probably end up moving to Canada where people aren't so hateful. P.S. If I receive any ignorant replies from hicks who don't like my medical condition or pursuit of happiness, I'll report you, and I will also laugh and feel sorry for you that you are so ignorant and hateful.

- Health insurance does not cover cosmetic surgeries. Hair removal is certainly a cosmetic surgery. Medications (i.e antibiotics and skin creams) should be covered by a regular insurance carrier. And i dont believe any insurance carrier will cover a gender surgery.
- well, watch where you move in canada, not all of it is good here ither. i live in Toronto, and i also have no coverage for any of that, its going to be an exspensive trip! but some portions of canada cover it if you are a citizin there
- Many cover the medications, medicare is covering my medication, I know Kaiser covers the medication and therapy, and some companies (but no insurance) will cover the surgery. No one covers hair removal or facial feminisation. email me if you want specifics
- Actually there are.I wished I can remember but in certain companies it is there. The city of SF I believe does as well.I googled "transgender health insurance" and got some hits. Also there are bigger corporations that are glbt friendly. happy trails
- There ARE some companies that will cover the SRS..sexual reassignment surgery. I don't want to list names because I'm not 100% sure on which ones, but I THINK...and I said THINK...maybe Aetna was one of the trans friendly ones? Not totally sure on that. But..as far as medications...I pay for mine out of pocket becuase it's not considered for a "medical disorder", it's considered for a "mental disorder". Gender identity disorder or gender dysphoria falls under the DSM-IV still...which sucks. However, sometimes if you can get a transfriendly psychiatrist, not a psychologist, to do your therapy...since they are also an M.D., they can work with insurance companies on things like medications. However, most of the time...therapy, medications, electrolysis, and things of that nature are paid for out of pocket. This is why many trans people never get all the procedures needed or wanted to "complete" their transition. This is also why you hear about a lot of MtF's going into the sex industry. To pay for surgeries and cosmetic procedures.
- I know Aetna (sp?) insurance will cover SRS or a large part of it. I have a friend and she has that insurance and was overjoyed when she read that they will cover it. However, I think the restrictions are more than the normal Harry Benjamin's standards of care. I think you need to go through the "Real-Life Test" (Living as the opposite gender) for 3 full years instead of just one. I also think you need to have SRS in the US. (and the deductable will pobably be more than you'd pay if you got it outside of the country). I'm not sure, but Aetna is worth looking into. I know BlueCross/BlueSheild is a really good insurance group and they might have something. I don't know how much any group will charge you for insurance though if you join with that as a pre-existing condition. Look into Aetna, good luck. I don't think anything is going to cover you for hair removal. Maybe for medicine if you can prove to the insurance company that it is for fixing a hormonal imbalance.
