ID Theft

Where do I begin to create an identity after my divorce?

I need advice about creating my own identity. I agreed to give my ex-husband a noncontested divorce and once I moved out I haven't been able to even open a banking acct. because I do not drive, thus no license, nor have I ever had a state ID. I once had a military dependent ID card but had to be turned in once he left the military. My passport expired after we came back to the states from a military move and my SSN card was lost in that move. I know my number but without the card and the fact that the passport expired in 1990 negates the fact that the picture on the passport is obviously a picture of me. I can't even get one last medical checkup before the divorce is final because he didn't renew his insurance on me once 2007 started and our old family Dr practice had been disolved last year. If anyone here has experienced a similar situation and/or knows how I can begin to get my ducks in a row I sure would appreciate hearing from you! *Secret*

  1. Well first you need to file for a Social security number. Once you get that then file for a new birth certificate. With those two things you can go to the BMV and get a drivers license. You need to do all of this ASAP. If you're not working then you can file for medicaid. That way you can go to the doctor. Hope this helps.
  2. a couple good ways to get your identity back: states issue ID cards. they are similiar to drivers licenses...photo, name, address, etc. just go to the DMV and get one. they may ask for your birth certificate, but perhaps that old passport will suffice. also, take driving lessons! this will enable you to literally move on from that old relationship and help you feel like you are your own person. good luck to you.
  3. First, contact the Vital Records Dept in the State you were born, and have them send you a Birth Certificate. Then get a State ID, then go to the SS office and they can re issue your SS card, then you can go to the bank and start your checking account.
