Does my home insurance or credit card protection protect against loss as well as theft?
I purchased an engagement ring through the internet. It was in the Fedex box one day on my table and then all of a sudden it wasn't. I just don't know whether someone slipped in and took it (the table is close to the front door which sometimes we leave open - doh), or whether someone here just threw the box away without realising that there was something in it (of course everyone in the house swears they didn't). My home insurance (same with the retail protection on my credit card) covers theft but it doesn't make mention of loss. It's not in the coverage section, but it's not in the exclusion section either. Can anyone advise me on how to approach this, seeing as I just don't know whether it was lost or stolen? Thanks a lot for the answers so far! Do you think I could get a police report at this stage (I only realized it was missing yesterday), or will they just laugh at me?

- Oops I lost it, isn't covered unless you've specifically insured the ring on a jewelry floater. If you haven't specifically insured it, it's not covered. When you read your policy, you'll notice that CONTENTS, aka, stuff, is covered on a NAMED PERIL basis - in other words, they list the things they cover FOR, like fire, theft, wind, hail, aircraft damage, falling objects, etc. If it's not listed as a covered peril, it's not covered.
- it depends on what form your home is written. most policys cover jewlery up $1000-1500 for theft. if it ws scheduled onto your policy, it would be covered up to the value. since you dont know what happened, that is called mysterious disappearance, and most home policys do not cover that UNLESS it is scheduled onto the policy. call your agent, he will be able to tell you if your policy covers this
- If you suspect theft, a police report would be a sure thing to have if you want to report a claim. Anything otherwise'll not cut it. So even if your insurance covers that type of loss, you should've taken the steps to minimize your exposure with a police report. I suspect you'd have to eat this loss. I kinda suspect someone disappeared that ring - which would make it a theft (technically). If it was thrown away inadvertently, hopefully someone would find it some day as an antique. Who knows, you may just be that person! Sorry man.
- Unless you have a stolen property piece of jewelry most home insurances would not cover it. I would call the home insurer on their toll free line(they have one right:)? and ask specifically about this. When you do having descriptions of the ring and price may help. The only credit card out there I know of that offers that loss protection on items you just bought is the American Express Platinum or higher charge card. I own one of those and I believe I can make claims up to $2000 a year to get back money for stuff I buy that I immediately lose. I have never had to file a claim yet so I don't know how that works more than that.
